Bay Area Restaurant News: Oakland's Tribune TavernExtra! extra! read all about it: Chris Pastena's new Tribune Tavern opens this week in Old Oakland, and we have mixed emotions. We are so excited about the new place, where Huw Thornton (SPQR, Locanda da Eva) will be heading up the kitchen, but we're a tad emotional about the location. The Tribune in the name -- and on the iconic tower -- is our own Oakland Tribune, now housed up the street in a distinctly less historic office building. But Pastena, of Chop Bar fame, and his partner, Temoor Noor (Grand Tavern), have transformed the Tribune's century-old newsroom into a tavern with stylish comfort food, local beers -- including cask beer from Linden Street Brewery -- and California wines. Happy hour, no deadlines. We are cheering up already. Details: 401 13th St., Oakland;

Inside Tribune Tavern, Stopping the Presses in OaklandThe beautiful specimen you see pictured above is Tribune Tavern, the newest project from very busy Oakland restaurateur Chris Pastena (Chop Bar), who just opened Lungomare in Jack London Square a couple of months back. He's teamed up with Temoor Noor (Grand Tavern) and Tom Henderson, who owns the Tribune building, for this most recent effort, housed in the former "local room" of the Oakland Tribune. The space was designed by Jim Maxwell of Architects II, who restored the original columns, marble, and moldings and added turn-of-the-century design elements like stained glass and a communal table constructed from old wheelbarrels, all crafted by Oakland artists.
